David Soane received his PhD (1978) in chemical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. From 1979 to 1994, he was a full-time faculty at UC Berkeley, where he published approximately 200 papers and two books. From 1994 until the present, Soane has been an entrepreneur and founder of several high-technology start-ups. These ventures share a common theme: applying cutting-edge scientific discoveries to mature industries with established mass markets. Among his earlier start-ups were Soane Technologies, ACLARA BioSciences, Alnis BioSciences, DuraFizz, Innovative Construction and Building Materials, and ZMS. Soane has also founded the nanotechnology-inspired textile company, Nano-Tex. He is currently active in three recent start-ups located in Cambridge, MA, developing platform technologies for three mature industries: paper/pulp (NanoPaper), oil/gas (Soane Energy) and mining (Soane Mining).
